Expozine Best English Zine Award Winner 2008! A social history and tactics lesson about the Critical Mass bicycle movement. Initially meant to serve as a lesson for the unaware, this document is a refresher and motivator about the movement. The biggest question - "is Critical Mass a protest or a celebration?" is explored in extensive detail here and in submission pieces by Ted White (early Critical Mass co-founder and director of "We aren't blocking Traffic!" documentary), Ayleen Crotty (co-host of the KBOO bike show), Scott Larkin (Go By Bicycle zine) , and more. There are also extensive reprints from the 1995 Critical Mass zine "Hey! Get Out of Our Way!" that updates the text and ideas. Illustrations (on every page!) by Matt Gauck, Fly, Sparky Taylor, Andy Singer, a clipping from "The Oregonian", and more!

A new DVD collection of short documentaries by Joe Biel about bikes, trains, dogs, patches, and the board game RISK.
"Martinis in the Bike Lane" (11 min) is a documentary short about the history of the decorated and unique bike lane markings in Portland, OR. Why does that one have a golf club or a book? Without giving too much away, it's an exciting issue that has been pondered by many and explained by few. See a fun and adventurous marking that Joe got to design. "Best Documentary Short" in the Mid-Valley Film Festival!
“Last Train out of North America” (19 min) discusses the lack of priority and funding towards passenger rail service in North America. Interviews with passengers, employees, and train obsessives tell the story of the rails being sold to cargo train companies, why the government fired David Gunn, & how each year appears to the be the last.
“Central Kansas - Canvas Central” (11 min) is a mockumentary about the obsessive nature of people with patches as a kind of media. For years we’ve tabled at bookfairs and sold primarily patches to young, excited individuals who ignored our reading material. I set out to get the inside story from this interesting set.
“Of Dice and Men” (39 min) chronicles players of the board game RISK and their obsessive behaviors. The game affects their personalities, turning anarchists and relaxed folks into conniving, manipulative, and calculated imperialists. Parallels to the patterns and habits of the US are drawn, showing how these situations, in the real world or a game, reveal human nature.
"Cowboy Hat & A Cane" (11 min) is a documentary short about America's most loved dog - Coda Bowles and her relationship with her people. Move over Lassie, this dumpster diver grew up on the mean streets of Portland after probably spending some time on a puppy farm, and was found roaming a dangerous intersection! The video focuses on Coda's history as much as it can be traced and then moves onto her daily habits and behaviors now. A fun movie for dog owners and lovers everywhere!

They say it's impossible to pick favorite children. I stewed a few hours on the process and decided on a pretty decent and mixed selection of zines I liked - Avow #11, 3.05 Metres: A Ten Foot Rule Primer, Ideas in Pictures #5, Mayorga #44, Murder Can Be Fun #12, OJ Killed Elvis #4, Papercutter #4, Revolutionaries, End of a Perfect Day #8, & Xtra Tuf #5
Don't know what to order? Here's a helpful hint! Sometimes people don't notice some of our special little titles!
Ask anyone who works for a magazine -- it's a job. Ask anyone who works on their zine -- it's a passion. And this book is a starting point for launching your own zine. A virtually endless supply of hints makes this an indespensible guide and the appendices add extensive directories of stores, libraries, reviewers, and zine distributors. ISBN 978-1-934620-06-9

*Have your poster shipped in a Poster Tube for extra protection! Posters not shipped in tubes will be folded in half for packaging and are more subject to wear while shipping.
This poster is especially recommended for tube shipping due to its thickness.

Joe Biel writes a new lengthy explanation of 4 years in a story titled "Brutal Honest Tea" about honest communication, the opportunity costs of various choices, the room for regret in those choices, drinking iced tea, and the results of social awkwardness. It questions the various life paths and whether or not people really think their decisions through or feel pressured to do certain things. Also contains episode 3 of his roommate reviews covering a period about 3 years ago. Reprinted on offset!
Back by popular demand! Due to the large number of young vasectomy-less individuals inquiring about how to get their plumbing fixed, this zine has been reprinted and ready for re-consumption thanks to offset printing technology at Eberhardt Press! Joe Biel strives to find logic, purpose, and meaning in his existence once again. This issue is about friends having accidental babies by the boatload and his resulting vasectomy to prevent himself from befalling the same fate. Plenty of details about seeking out a vasectomy, the actual surgery, and the reasons why. It's probing and personal and has the usual slice of life reality. Also includes roommate reviews supplement #4 covering the period of 2001 living at the Onramp. More gritty details about other peoples' lives. Can you figure out the mystery of how the clip art is relevant to the text? Now a newly offset printed second version!
Three years after the fact Joe busts out a zine tour based zine about "Cocoon: The Road Trip" from 2004. A collection of hand drawn maps, photos by Dave Roche, and travelling anecdotes from the road, the zine presents a pretty strong case for the idea that zine making and zine tours really are not that hard to put together and can be kind of cool sometimes. Look at all of the great, zany experiences that you, yourself could experience on the road! More than that it's a look at friendship and the motivators and hard times that one experiences by pushing yourself into more trying and difficult situations.
