That Gordon Smalls! In one zine he describes (complete with pictures) how he pees in the shower, which involves running the water, waiting until it's warming, peeing from the OUTSIDE and then stepping in, all so he can "save water" and not flush the toilet.
In this episode, Our mustachioed, bespeckled, long haired hero shows us how to steal from expensive chain grocery stores. Except he gets caught and then gets thrown in jail. The rest of this heart breaking comic is Gordon being humiliated and treated like cattle in a cue.
Our clever "anonymous" artist sure knows how to draw! Sometimes subtle, sometimes quite obvious, the humor and "true to life" images are giddily wonderful. Gordon is your everyday kinda guy, observing the world in all it's strange, cynical, and contradictory glory. Look at Ken's comic samples online!
Another great comic by Ken Dahl! "Imagine never kissing anyone on the lips ever again," reads the first panel, and from there you are hooked. Monsters is a tale of two lovers who discover that one of them has herpes, and must face how this affects their relationship. It's sad and honest without being whiny or self-indulgent. And this time it's a two-parter with a cliff-hanger ending. We can't wait to read Monsters #2! Look at Ken's comic samples online!
Monsters #2 picks up where the series left off. Rory discovers she has herpes, and knows it came from Ken. Rory and Ken begin to drift apart, feeling alienated from each other, and ultimately, their sexuality in general. What they don't know about herpes could fill a book. Over time, their fears and uncertainties transform their once loving relationship into a nightmare of mistrust and anger. Eventually, they begin to see other people, and learn how easy it is to infect others, their disgust towards their bodies growing. Will there be a happy ending to this Ignatz award winning series? We hope so. This issue as a stand-alone was beautiful, but so sad!
A mishmash of entertaining, well-drawn, and funny comics. Poignant subject matter - including peeing in the shower, swinging at night, a childhood friend who he had his first sexual (?) encounters with, the joys of putting frozen bananas in your cereal, anti-military Beetle Bailey parodies, paraodies of old punks, and other such topics. Looking at it as one representation of a person and art I feel like I have better understanding of the universe and Ken's strange childhood. I can't imagine two young boys being allowed to shower together, fetishize war, read porno mags, or to play games with each other's penises but I'm sure this is more common than I realize and this comic perhaps could be a meeting point to bring together those people. Truly an entertaining read (this coming from a particularly tough critic). Look at Ken's comic samples online!
Ken Dahl provides us with a hilarious and poignant autobio comic about fear & security in a post 9/11 patriotic-frenzied world. Playful drawings mixed with biting social commentary illustrate Dahl's recent escapades at the San Francisco airport. There are hilarious re-tellings of pat down searches, loudspeaker announcements, having difficulty getting vegan food on the airplane & even having to say the pledge of allegiance. By the end you'll be wondering who and what are the real terrorists, that is, if you're not rolling on the floor from this great comic zine. Look at Ken's comic samples online!
