Matte's zine talks about becoming a husband and a father, buying a home, recycling old bikes and maintaining commuter bikes, starting a garden, composting, gardening out of containers, veganism, carrying out Jesus' message, redistribution of wealth, war resistance, anarchism, education, and true DIY culture and home repairs. I don't know about you but these are the things that I love to do with my time also so this is right up my alley.
Resist #46 is absolutely jam-packed with information! As always, it's very very bicycle-centric. This issue has detailed bike cart instructions, with a comparison between welding and bolting, and extensive photos of punks riding a circle bike. For those who've never witnessed it, a circle bike is a bike that you can ride in a full circle, as in you hang upside-down! "Coffee" examines the love of coffee in punk zine culture, and there's a lot of reflections on gardening as well. And it comes with a free beautiful full color bicycle postcard!
Combining Jesus worship with mutant bike construction is probably one of the most unlikely marriages of all time but it's most probable in zine-land and this zine is your source. From an anthropologist's (albeit even one like myself who is quite skeptical of Christianity) perspective, this is one of the most fascinating zines of all time! A Minneapolis tall bike crew "The Scallywags" demonstrate their love of Jesus on the back of their sleeveless jean vests which are emblazoned with "Jesus is Lord". They teach you how to build various kinds of freak bikes and mutant bikes including a folding tall bike and wooden bikes that they build in Rwanda on a little missionary trip. All in all, it's hard not to read with your mouth open and questioning the whole time "Are these guys for real?".
