Fifth Grade 44 pages, 1/4 size, copied (2 oz) * OUT OF STOCK *

Years after the bulk of Ben's possessions were destroyed in a fire, he came across his fifth grade yearbook in mom's attic. This discovery stirred up old memories which are presented in this zine. He recreates photos from the yearbook photos by hand with line drawings. Most are accompanied by words. Some are short captions: "One day at recess, while playing soccer, he kicked my arm and broke it," or "His trial had the town enthralled for months." Others are lengthier anecdotes about friends, girls, and other classmates, including random events and how things began or ended. Makes me want to flip through my old yearbook to see what I can remember about the people I've forgotten.

The format of this zine may remind some of Applicant, but it's definitely it's own creature.

a Gentrification Reader 56 pages, 1/2 legal, copied (6 oz) $3.00

How often do you think about gentrification? Probably not often, unless it’s happening right around you. I know I don’t. And, even if you are witnessing it firsthand, you might not be against it. You might think that getting rid of those old run-down buildings and cleaning up the place is a good idea. But gentrification isn’t that simple. In most cases, it means that indigenous, usually lower-income, families are uprooted from the neighborhoods that they grew up in so that higher-income folks can come in and get cheap real estate, fix it up, and take the neighborhoods as their own. It’s happening in cities all over the world, but particularly in the U.S. This zine is a compilation of articles from other publications on gentrification that has occurred and is occurring in various cities, including New York, New Orleans, Portland, Chicago, and London. It’s an important and useful publication and it deserves a place in your library.

Skot! did an excellent job putting together this resource explaining gentrification in simpler terms along with the motives behind it. It talks about property values, squatting, Portland, OR, Chicago, stories and comics by Seth Toboccman, San Francisco, Manhattan, Memphis, and so much more! This is 8 years old so some of the information is dated (current developments, areas of panic, etc) but the underlying themes, motives, and processes have not changed. They have only started to develop at a more alarming pace!

Hack This Zine #5 58 pages, b&w, 1/2 size (3 oz) $2.00

I think I'm the 5th person in a row that doesn't know much about hacking, but thinks this zine is amazing. Go figure. What I can tell you is that the content is really well-rounded! There's a time-line of electronic civil disobedience actions and updates about several imprisoned hacktivists. There's talking tech, a section with reviews of alternative internets and the dark side of the PE file format. Another highlight is info on using scanners to listen to inter-yard communication while hopping freight. This is one of the most solid zines out there, and gives us hope, that a better "PC World" is possible. Know what I mean?

How Could This Happen? A Brief History and Analysis of the 9/11 Attacks 16 pages, 1/2 size, copied (1 oz) * OUT OF STOCK *

Ranger gives us a disturbing analysis of what must have happened during the attacks on 9/11. It shows a simple timeline of the hijacked flights, talks about fighter jets not being launched as protocol calls for, 116 separate gov't agencies failing to follow standard operating procedures, the physical impossibility of steel melting and concrete turning to powder from the plane collisions or that it would call for a complete re-tooling of architecture and the way buildings are built, but instead the evidence was stolen and destroyed immediately before such true analysis of what remained could be conducted, the high possibility that there were explosives in the towers as well that caused them to come down, as well as some conclusions. While this analysis is simplified because there is so much evidence involved it is a great start to doing more research on the issues at hand.

Indies Under Fire DVD DVD (5 oz) $25.00

A frightening look at the devastating effects of corporate media retail outlets (can we even really call them bookstores?) on their independent competitors. The film focuses on the vibrant book cultures in Capitola and Palo Alto, CA, and the efforts of booksellers and readers to keep out Borders and Barnes & Noble and save the local bookstores from going under. The tenacity of the booksellers is only rivaled by the frightening conviction of the "big box" representatives, who justify their presence in the community as encouraging a "freedom of choice" for the consumer. Watch the trailer!
