Life of an Anarchist Book: The Alexander Berkman Reader 352 pages, paperback, 1/2 size (14 oz) $16.95

An anarchist, attempted assassin, lover of Emma Goldman, and sharp critic of the Russian revolution, Alexander Berkman (1870-1936) immersed himself in the political passions of his time, and this rich collection of his writings pays testiment to his accomplishments. Through the Homestead Strike of 1892, Alexander attempted to assassinate industrialist Henry Frick. Excerpts from his prison memoirs demonstrate the maturation of Berkman's idealism during his 14-year term. Reprints from his zine, The Blast, urgently lash out against war and in favor of birth control, worker unity and free speech. Alexander was deported to Russia in 1919 and his thoughts surrounding their social climate are some of the most exciting in this book. Also included is the pamphlet "The ABC of Anarchism" and several letters to and from Emma Goldman. In one exchange, they debate the role of violence; in another, Emma calls Alexander "the greatest force in my life."
