Snakepit book: My Life in a Jugular Vein 288 pages, 1/2 size, paperback (14 oz) $15.00 $12.00

In a sense, despite turning the big 3-0, Ben Snakepit captures the same spirit in the comics he draws to summarise each and every day of nearly the last decade of his life. In his second collection condensing the last three years we see our hero move to and from Canada, tour the world with J Church, hang out with the Sainte Catherines, meet Mike Watt, get caught in the throes of whirlwind romances and we're there to watch helplessly as he gets his heart broken. There's also more pants-shitting, Adderall tripping and days of doing absolutely nothing to keep the old school fans happy. Also keeping with tradition there's a song allocated to each day and this collection comes with a mix cd of some of those songs for the maximum Snakepit life experience.

Voted Best Minicomic - Wizard March 2006! Voted Best local comic – Austin Statesman 2006! ISBN 0-9788665-5-X

Spiral Bound Book 184 pages. full size, paperback (18 oz) $14.95

You might remember Aaron Renier as the artist who drew the ever popular Chainring Heart image! Check out his well defined animal characters behaving as humans.

"Top Shelf has a real winner with Aaron Renier's delightful, action-packed graphic novel for all ages. Innocence and naiveté dominate the character traits of the cast of cute, anthropomorphic characters while the meaning of friendship and loyalty is explored. The fast-paced tale unfolds through detailed illustrations on pages meant to resemble lined, spiral notebook paper, hence the title. The main characters are Turnip, an insecure little elephant; Stucky, a confident, friendly hound; Ana, an aspiring, investigative bunny reporter; and Emily, the clever little bird photographer experiencing self-discovery. They tap into their own creativity and resourcefulness, but they also learn of the destructive power of too much ambition. Spiral-Bound is entertaining without being didactic and is highly recommended for all youth graphic novel collections within public and school libraries. Even adult readers will identify with the angst experienced by the loveable characters and celebrate the happy resolution of the mystery." -- Jeannine Wiese, Ingram Library Services

Stencil Graffiti Book 120 pages, 8x9", paperback (22 oz) $19.95

This was the first book to comprehensively examine the design phenomenon, Tristan Manco traces the history of stencil art and provides an exciting and thorough overview of the medium. From cave paintings, Chinese silks and Egyptian pyramids to Art Nouveau pochoirs and the Pop art forerunners of stencil art, and then proceeds to a specific history of Stencil Graffiti, tracing its genesis in the Italian fascist propaganda of the 1940s and Basque and Mexican political protests of the 1970s, and examining Stencil Style (typography, functional stencilling, street signage, advertising, decoration). The core of the book is the state of Stencil Graffiti today, from Pop Art to individual street artists' work plus spreads arranged by theme/subject. Four hundred color illustrations highlight the incredible outpouring of spray-can and stencil art bombing billboards and vacant walls near you today. From Banksy to Obey, its all here, and a whole lot more.

Stencil Pirates Book 250 pages, oversize, paperback (15 oz) * OUT OF STOCK *

Over 200 oversize, full-color pages, Josh MacPhee lays out the most comprehensive book on the art of the street stencil. Stencil Pirates places street graffiti within the larger pantheon of public expression. From political to abstract and purely aesthetic (and even to the official Post No Bills, anyone) - from tagging to public announcements - street stencils have remade the way pedestrians, artists, and even corporations think about public space. Whether as part of the anti-gentrification struggles in New York or as a powerful tool during the recent uprising in Argentina, stencils are placed in their challenging, artistic, and political context. Plus of course, there's a cut-and-spray instruction manual, cardboard patterns, and the hundreds and hundreds (and hundreds) of photos. From Banksy to Tobocoman, and a whole lot more. An incredible work, and collection of works.

Stories Care Forgot Book 150 pages, paperback, 6x9" (11 oz) $15.00

An anthology of zines from and about New Orleans. For years the Crescent City's thriving punk and zine community has produced beautifully rendered volumes of writing and artwork. Authors have poured their hearts out, sharing their thoughts and opinions on music, politics, bikes, gentrification, gender, class and, of course, the city itself. Selections from Chainbreaker, Nosedive, Crude Noise, Rocket Queen, Emergency, I Hate This Part of Texas, and Chihuahua and Pitbull. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, many of the originals of these zines have been lost or destroyed. This book serves not only as a preservation, but also, by donating author proceeds towards grassroots New Orleans organizations, as a step towards rebuilding that city that inspired and shaped the body of this work.

Tales of a Punk Rock Nothing 160 pages, offset, perfect bound, 1/2 size (8 oz) $8.00

A fairly cute and telling fictional journal/scrapbook about a Jewish kid from Tennessee, who moves to D.C. to hang out with militant vegetarians, manifesto-writing shoplifters, and strippers who write feminist theory. Elliot's two years in D.C. unfold in a series of letters to his former girlfriend, letters to his little sister back home, journal entries, and three issues of his zine, "Mindcleaner".

Elliot's punk experience runs the gamut, from living in the Positive Force house, a hazy relationship with a riot grrrrl, working in a health food store at Dupont Circle, trying to organize a collective, moving to Mt. Pleasant, and of course, being in a band and putting out a record. I believe the book is pretty much based on the co-author's experiences in moving to D.C. and I suppose it captures/satirizes a lot of the D.C. "scene" pretty accurately. Although the names have been changed, plenty of D.C. bands (Fugazi, Nation of Ulysses) and scenesters will be recognizable to people in the know. The book works better as a rabid cry to "do something" instead of posing--an aim that is always applaudable. It's critique/satire of the D.C. scene gets a little stale by the end, it seems to me like a lot of Elliot's disillusionment stems from idealized expectations about D.C. It's got everything you could want out of a novel: a chase scene, a sex scene, plus angst-ridden critiques of American society.

Tape Op: The Book About Creative Music Recording 215 pages, full size, paperback (18 oz) $19.95

This book opens up the door to the minds and techniques of the most interesting and enginuitive recording engineers, producers, and artists. Creativity, ingenuity, and using whatever facilities are available are the keys - from amazing albums recorded on 4-track cassette by the likes of Guided By Voices or Elliott Smith to big studio productions with Mitchell Froom, Don Dixon, or Steve Albini. Inside, there's a wealth of practical information for the home-recordist, musician, record producer, or the curious on how to get the most out of any recording scenario. Tape Op magazine is probably the smartest recording reference on planet Earth and I feel like even without a tremendous application for most of the techniques I pick up, I'm always enthralled to read about them. Remember, the most important tip: get more microphones!

Televisionaries book: The Red Army Faction 1963-1993 112 pages, 1/2 size, paperback (7 oz) $10.95 $8.25

"It's been a long time since I've been astounded by a non-fiction book, but after finishing 'Televisionaries: The Red Army Faction Story 1963-1993', I put the book down and just tried to absorb what I'd read. The Red Army Faction had its rather innocuous beginnings in Germany in the early 60s. The name was created as a sort of joke--a combination of the Royal Air Force and the Red Army. Founded by Horst Mahler, a small handful of individuals informally banded together ostensibly to protest the Vietnam War, the continuance of Fascism in the BRD, and to support the Palestinian cause. The Socialist Student Movement planned to lob custard pies at American VP, Hubert Humphrey. The student movements heated up rapidly after protests were staged against the Shah of Iran's visit to Berlin. In the first violence to occur, student, Benno Ohnesorg was shot in the head by the Popo (Political Police). Things rapidly escalated, and disintegrated from this incident.

A few bombs, demonstrations, and brief jail sentences later, the group is off training with the PLO. By 1972, the RAF is responsible for several devastating bombings at American bases in the BRD, and it's clear that the German government has a serious problem on its hands. The German authorities captured and 'dealt' with leading members of the RAF, and it's not a pretty picture. The original, and incarcerated RAF members were an attractive nuisance for the government, and the Second Generation RAF committed bigger, bolder, and more violent acts--freeing their imprisoned comrades became an imperative. Over the next two decades, the RAF--which mutated and was in a continual state of flux--rampaged through Germany. The far more brutal Second Generation RAF kidnapped industrialists, politicians and judges--often murdering their hostages. The Second Generation RAF even hijacked planes in an attempt to swap hostages for imprisoned RAF members. Carlos, the Jackal, aided the RAF in one hijacking episode.

Black and white photographs accompany the text. There are surprisingly few books on the subject of the RAF. "Televisionaries" delivers informative--and chilling information." -Displaced Human

Temp Slave Book, Best of 160 pages, offset, perfect bound, 1/2 size (11 oz) $10.00

This is the collection work from TEMP SLAVE! zine. It chronicles Jeff's chronic habit of working as a temp. Stories and cartoons written by temps. Over the years this incredible and singular attack on temporary agencies, bosses and corporations has been a mighty megaphone for the people who bust their ass working shit jobs. "Fridays are 'casual days' around here, which means that we are allowed to wear jeans, t- shirts, tennis shoes, athletic socks and so forth - - this way, we can all feel free to 'let our hair down' as they say, and not be so 'uptight.' Next week I will smear my clothes with mud and make sure that my face is covered with crumbs and dried vomit before arriving in the morning. I will also show off the track marks on my forearms and the three symmetrical scars running across my left wrist. I have a feeling that people will be most impressed with what a casual guy I can be." --David Noon from Best of Temp Slave! (Abner)

Terrible Thunder: The Story of the New Orleans Sniper 300 pages, offset, perfect bound, 1/2 size (14 oz) $16.95 $12.00

On New Year's Eve in New Orleans, 1972, Mark James Essex began one of the most violent and deadly sniper attacks on policemen that any American city had ever seen. It was yet another tragic journey down the road of race hatred, and before it ended one week later, hundreds of heavily armed police and a Marine Corps assault helicopter would be called to a burning downtown hotel to battle phantom gunmen who refused to surrender or to be killed. Peter Hernon, the author of Terrible Thunder, lives near Chicago with his wife, Janice, and two daughters. An editor for the Chicago Tribune, he has written five books and was co-author of a bestselling look at the Anheuser-Busch dynasty: Under the Influence. He worked as a journalist in New Orleans.

Al Burian's (Burn Collector, Milemarker) collection of comics, drawings and handwritten text, compiling the various titles that he published under Migraine Comics in the mid to late nineties. The book is cohesive and doesn't resemble a comic anthology as much as a handwritten account of Al's thoughts at the time. Covers Al's usual musings over life's little intricacies and meanings as well as the mental processes of growing up from his days in Portland, moving to Providence, and a walking tour of his hometown. The entire book is handwritten and illustrated by Al. ISBN 0-9726967-3-3

Upping the Anti #4 204 pages, color cover, 4.5x6.5 (9 oz) $10.00

We picked these up in Canada and they are amazingly well-rounded. Focusing mostly on Canada, they're regularly published journals of radical thought that are engaging and intelligent. They're collectively produced and the writing is varied and excellent. And despite it's being published from Canada, the themes covered, such as anarchism and social reform, are really relevant to all of us.

In this issue:

A life of anarchy, what's beyond the state?, trans-politics and anti-capitalism, the world social forum, solidarity with the six nations, prison abolition, and the Vancouver housing crisis. Plus as always, there's a letters section and book reviews.
