Patch #117: Bike Jocks are Still Jocks
6x3", screenprint on canvas (0.10 oz)
* OUT OF STOCK *
Remember to challenge macho attitudes in bike culture.
Despite popular opinion in anarcho punk circle, competition isn't inherently oppressive or wrong. Competitive cycling has a long tradition of breaking race, gender and class barriers, and requires more stamina and strength than most other sports. While some cyclists are assholes, you can't hate on cycling as a whole because of it. Besides, all you "fixie" riders bite 10-20 year old trends in road racing without realizing the stuff was cast aside for a reason.
tim krabbe
I would just like to let Gracchus here know that it's impossible for a fixed gear bicycle not to have brakes...you just stop pedaling...seriously
dood
It's springtime, and it seems the most dangerous people on the road are not car and light truck drivers--they're jocks on fixed gear bikes with no brakes and nil concern. We're all put at risk because of the level of stress they induce. Bike jocks indeed--fewer people *can* ride because of them...or walk...or drive... elitist, and inviting of bitter backlash.
gracchus
I decided to try fixed gear, admittedly because of the fad; but I've also ridden geared & singlespeed bikes. I find fixed to be the easiest to ride (read: laziest: the bike is lighter, the constant propulsion is easier, especially uphill). I think that once we try them, sometimes our enthusiasm for our fixed bikes turns into discrimination against other types and that's not cool, and so I can totally see where this patch comes in... When I see this patch I think of "Bike Jocks" as in the fixie guys and girls who have that, "Brakes are for pussies" attitude and automatically treat people like shit over what type of bike they ride. (And I totally agree with "not a jock" about a good pair of spandex pants, btw, even if only wearing them under something else.)
vanbiker
woah, shouldn't we be happy that people are riding bikes at all? Bike jock or not, bikes rawk and everyone should be able to enjoy them the way they choose to w/out being criticized, ostricized or generalized...fuck isms..
primigravida
Bike jocks don't have a particular look and can be found anywhere. When someone tells you what/how you should be riding, just laugh in their face. It's true that they hate themselves and just want to be accepted.
anonymous
I love this patch! I'm way into biking, and when i started dating a guy that was into biking too, I thought at first that it was a match made in heaven. It turned out that he wanted to be a personal trainer and couldn't comprehend why you would want to ride your bike at anything other than a race pace. If we ever went on a group ride, all he did was complain about how slow everyone else was. I had to kick him to the curb, and now I have to get this patch!!
kiddo
I ride fixed gear bikes cause I don't have to think about gears and every corner and stop light becomes my track. I like to go fast. I'm a bike nerd. I hope everyone rides a bike, I don't give a rats if you have a derrailure or not. Elitists are elitists...and generally just hate themselves and therefore everyone else.
sherbertbiker
I've had the same thing happen with the whole fixed gear deal. We should be encouraging people to ride ANY kind of bike. Down with elitist attitudes!
anon
Perhaps before identifying "spandex wearing assholes" as worthless chump yuppies, one should try and ride a serious amount of miles and report how their crotch feels once it is a fiery pit of chafing, soreness and infection. You shouldn't stereotype people based on their choice of function based clothing (or any clothing for that matter).
not a jock
Wow, I'm so glad that you liked my design idea! I hate how jock attitudes seep into punk and bike cultures. I even had a supposed anarchist/feminist kid tell me "gears are for pussies" in response to me liking my bike with gears and not jumping into the fixed gear trend. That was the last straw!
alex wrekk
I was walking in New York last night and some bike jock dick just about runs into my girlfriend and me, he followed it up with screaming "fucking assholes!” If I were to ever come anywhere close to running into someone on my bike, I would stop and see if they were ok. This just shows the jock attitude that these people have. I bet he was in such a rush because he was going to the nearest bike shop to buy another pair of $95 spandex short shorts.
Jon
This patch is amazing! I don't know how many times pretentious, spandex-wearing assholes have made comments about "intrusion" as far as bicyclists' rights are concerned when I probably ride my bike as often as, or possibly more than they do. Microcosm never ceases to amaze me.
