IPRC Audio Zine, Vol 1 CD 70 minutes, compact disc (5 oz) $8.00

A digital smorgasboard of Portland zine authors reading their own work assembled onto a 12 track, 70 minute disc featuring Steve Gevurtz (Journalsong), Ariel Gore (Hip Mama), Dave Roche (On Subbing), Shoshanna Cohen (Gulper), Dan Howland (Journal of Ride Theory), Kate Lopresti (Constant Rider), Nicole Georges (Invincible Summer), Clutch McBastard (Clutch), Moe Bowstern (Xtra Tuf), Krissy Durden (Figure 8), Mark Russell (Penny Dreadful), Eleanor Whitney (Indulgence), and our own Alex Wrekk (Brainscan Zine). The pieces are all augmented by musical interludes and little bonuses that don't translate as well into print (like hearing the records Clutch references) and having guest voices read additional parts.

This audio zine is a benefit for the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) in Portland, Oregon.

I was kind of skeptical when I got this audio-zine in my review box. Part of the charm of zines for me is the complete package. The writing, the layout, the feeling of the paper, the cover art--the whole thing. I was afraid that this audio-zine...would not have the charm that I like so much about zines. I was wrong. Yes, and audio-zine or a zine compilation like this one is completely different from a regular zine, but you shouldn't try to look at it as a substitute for a regular zine. This is more an addition to regular zines, because you get an extra part added to the experience: the voice of the writer, reading the piece in the way that he or she had initially intended it to be read. I really liked this extra personal touch and most of the stories and ramblings on this CD are really cool and interesting. Listening to this gave me the same kind of feeling as reading a zine and I'm determined to check out some of the zines that were represented on this disc of whom I had never heard...Highly recommended and a cool idea.
