You Don't Get There From Here #3 32 pages,b&w,1/4 size (2 oz) $2.00

A new one from Carrie McNinch! This one is a bit different, and she herself says so. These daily panels chronicle Carrie's trip to Rome and Venice, Italy. And when in Rome, Carrie sets her sights on the types of goals we all might: To find both the best coffee and the best pizza! There are also visits to beautiful historical sites, and of course, guest appearances by cats--hers, and others. What more could you want in a zine? I'd say not much.

Whenever one of Carrie's zines arrives in the mail, I drop whatever I'm doing, plop on the couch, and do my damndest not to inhale its goodness in one giant huff. As a fellow traveler, I appreciated this issue's record of the many moods and levels of energy and loneliness Carrie experienced on her solo trip to Italy. The highs and lows seem really familiar... (If anyone's going to Rome, get this girl a bag of beans from Tazo d'Oro!) As the mother of two nutty, well-documented small children, I have my nose pressed to the glass of her autonomy, at least as it's represented in this ongoing project! For better of worse, she spends large chunks of time at no one's mercy save her own. As in James Kochalka's American Elf, each day gets 3 panels. Sometimes a lonely, unproductive day takes a turn for the better because of the smallest thing: an orb weaver, a slice of banana cream pie, a correctly placed acupuncture pin, mail... Sometimes a great day takes a digger, usually because of Carrie's constant struggle to stay off the sauce. And I get a big bang out of the fact that every 3 panel day gets its own soundtrack,in the form of a song title, something that Carrie was presumably listening to that day. Ayun Halliday
