New York, New York, the big bad early 1980's. Hip-Hop culture, born in the streets of South Bronx in the late 70's, is taking off. The most visual representation of this new culture is graffiti art, and nowhere is it seen more than on the subway cars of the Metropolitan Transit Authority. The graf artists sneak about finding the best spots to "throw up" their tags, while honing their art (and an artform) in the process. This documentary was originally shown on PBS in 1983 and has become legendary in the years that have passed. Filmmakers Silver and Chalfant follow several prominent graffiti artists around to get their take on the craft and the world around them. Interspersed is conversations with Mayor Koch and other authority figures as they fight the graf artists. Ultimately, the city and the MTA win, leaving this visual record the best way to witness those painted cars in all their glory. Vaughn Bode! Watch the trailer!
