It's important to note that power is actually based in the ability to apply sanctions, which is not necessarily violent. The key is whether or not you are attempting to cause injury. Having a box of cupcakes is power because you can apply the sanction of giving or refusing a cupcake, but it is not based in violence because this sanction does not involve injuring anyone (unless, of course, they have a pathological attachment to cupcakes -- then you're causing emotional injury). Any debate about violence should come with a recognition that other forms of power are out there. It also should come with a recognition that the necessity of power itself is not at all established. It's a big free world and thankfully in this country we have a tradition of mostly free speech. In my opinion, this t-shirt intends to incite violence, propagate hate and diminish community. I personally don't see police officers as a root of any evil, and I disagree that encouraging violence against police somehow improves the world. A lot of the t-shirts being sold here are pretty thoughtful. This one is thoughtless. zenbob
I am a raging hippie, always have been. I am also a retired firefighter paramedic. Cops have saved my life. Twice. Back off assholes. Oh. ummm I also have seen cops beat someone badly while handcuffed in the back of a cop car parked in the dark. They are human. You that critisize, have no clue how incredibly hard it is to not be affected by child abuse and its victims. I have treated many abuse victims and if I could get away with beating the fuck out of some dude who beat his kid into unconcsiousness I would. I have "started an IV" oops, "several (10?)" times on abusers, making sure I missed the vein deeply each time. Oooops. Clayton
To anonymous: for every good cop, there's another bad cop. And it's easy to say all cops are splendidily wonderful when you haven't been sexually assulted twice, only to get no help from cops what so ever. Aly B
a.oran.: i think it's not very accurate to say "not let the pigs get away with murder just cos sometimes they save people in car accidents." what they do every day is save people and help people, not sometimes. the vast majority are not murdering anyone, so your statement is a misleading hyperbole. when the law is to not drink and drive, is it a contradiction to both help the public and enforce that law? how about when they are enforcing the law of not raping other human beings? nothing is black and white. doughball
i think this shirt is supposed to be directed twoards the institution of government as a whole, but all this pro cop sentiment is bullshit. it is true that cops individually help people sometimes, but as a whole they do more harm than good. as far as im concerned, doughball, inforcing the law and helping us is a contradiction of terms. you dont have to be a cop to help people out at accidents either. we just need to become more of a community and help eachother out, and not let the pigs get away with murder just cos sometimes they save people in car accidents. a.oran.
a lot of these comments make me wonder how many of you would feel about cops if they were assissting you after you'd been assaulted. if they recovered something of yours that was stolen. if they were the first on the scene of an accident you were in, and saved your life. it's one thing to be against the institution of the police, and negative things that have been allowed to occur within the police force. it's another to be violent towards individual police officers, or to disrespect someone simply because of their occupation, which is to enforce the law and protect you when you need help. the problem with this shirt is that there is no distinction between the two. doughball

i've met cops who are nice people before, but the bottom line is they are still a cop. they are authoritarians that until they are no longer in that position are the enemy. i hate when people try to stick up for cops - its mostly white kids whose privledge allows them to not worry about running into a cop. anarquista
What's with people sticking up for cops? I know a few great people who are cops, but that in no way justifies the the history or existence of the police. Maybe that fine young woman on the T-shirt is simply kicking the ideals of the police state, while also empowering herself? Nick Genitals

Cops are people too. Some are good some are bad. An image of a woman defending herself against a police officer unlawfully assaulting her is great. But maybe this woman is a pyromaniac with a long criminal record that needs to be brought to justice. gift of vision

Sorry, shirts come mostly in just one color. We tried to make them more uniform so people knew what they were getting. The downside is that because fair trade shirts are so expensive, stocking every size in even 1 color is so expensive we can't afford to stock 2 colors. Joe
